Two Full-time Faculty Positions in Fashion Studies
Columbia College Chicago is an urban institution of over 12,000 undergraduate and graduate students emphasizing arts, media, and communications in a liberal arts setting. We are seeking applications for two full-time tenure-track or tenured faculty positions (rank open) in Fashion Studies beginning August 16, 2010. The College currently has over 800 undergraduate students studying Fashion Design and Fashion Retail Management with a comprehensive program of courses and programs in fashion that cater to a diverse student body. The department is developing curriculum that emphasizes aspects of design, business, theory, and practice, and will include cross- and inter-disciplinary offerings within a vibrant environment where innovation and experimentation are actively encouraged and nurtured.
Position # 846 Fashion Designer and Educator
Qualifications include an advanced or terminal degree in Fashion Design or related specialty and/or substantial equivalent industry experience, a documented record of accomplishments in professional practice, research, and/or teaching, and demonstrated competence in interdisciplinary approaches. Candidates must possess demonstrable pattern-making, draping, construction, and tailoring skills as well as possess expert knowledge about 20th and 21st century fashion and design history. Experience with computer design and pattern-making software such as Gerber, Lectra, Photoshop, and Illustrator is preferred. Strong technical, collaborative and communication skills are required as well as strong experience or potential for working in a culturally diverse work environment. This faculty position requires excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level or experience in related activities that suggests strong likelihood of success in the classroom and demonstrates clear understanding of the industry and educational standards relevant to designers, practitioners, managers, and future leaders in the diverse field of fashion.
Position # 873 Fashion Business and Management
Qualifications include an advanced or terminal degree in Fashion Business or Management or related specialty and/or substantial equivalent industry experience, a documented record of accomplishments in professional practice, research, and/or teaching, and demonstrated competence in interdisciplinary approaches. This faculty position requires excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate level or experience in related activities that suggests strong likelihood of success in the classroom and demonstrates clear understanding of the industry and educational standards relevant to designers, practitioners, managers, and future leaders in the diverse field of fashion. The preferred Candidate will possess expert knowledge about the evolution of fashion and retail management issues, and will have the ability to address and forecast current and future issues and challenges. Strong technical, collaborative and communication skills are required as well as strong experience or potential for working in a culturally diverse work environment. The successful candidate will embrace technology in the classroom as well as encourage the many uses for technology in advancing new modalities of retail beyond bricks and clicks.
Teaching load is 3 courses per semester. Full-time faculty members also advise students and participate in curriculum development and committee service at the department and college level. The use of active teaching and learning approaches is expected, as well as a demonstrated ability to embed course concepts in real world application. Tenured and tenure track faculty are also expected to continue active research, creative endeavor, or professional practice and professional development in his/her field.

Sample Maker/Seamstress – posted 2/10/10
Looking for an independent seamstress for sample making and small lines of production. Must have extensive professional experience sewing high-end, high-quality garments and working with delicate fabrics, such as silk chiffon. Must have impeccable eye for detail and use industry standards for finishing. This candidate must have their own equipment, including professional serger, and workspace. We would prefer someone in the Chicago area.
